Zorlu Holding purchased the licensing right of Denizcilik Bank in a tender which was held by the Privatization Administration, and registered its name as DenizBank within the same year. After the purchase, Chairman of the Board of Zorlu Holding Mr. Ahmet Nazif Zorlu invited Garanti Bank Moscow’s founder CEO Mr. Hakan Ateş at that time to structure the new bank by taking the helm of it and become the Founder CEO.
DenizBank started its activities in İstanbul in a room of Swissotel.
First 13 branches were opened. Along with the 8 branches which were entered into service in Istanbul, DenizBank reached customers in Anatolia with its branches in Trabzon, Ankara, Bursa, Denizli and İzmir.

DenizInvestment, DenizLeasing and DenizFactoring became operational.

Anadolu Kredi Kartları (AKK) that was within the body of Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (SDIF) was acquired.
Deniz Investment Trust became operational.

DenizBank’s journey in agriculture sector started with the acquisition of Tarişbank, at a time when no private banks had entered into this sector.
DenizBank AG became operational in Austria.
Technology base of the bank, InterTech started to continue its activities under the roof of DenizBank.

DenizBank Moscow was established and DenizBank Germany Representative Office Frankfurt branch became operational.
DenizBank Financial Services Group was established to create a financial supermarket that offers various financial services under the same roof.

DenizBank was publicly offered with a 5 multiplier record subscription. After the most successful public offering of the year, stocks of the bank started to be traded in Istanbul Stock Exchange.
In this period, the bank established DenizCulture, which brings many works of culture and arts to art-lovers for years.
Developed by DenizBank as a first in Agriculture banking field, “Producer Card”, the biggest supporter of farmers, was actualised.

Bank took its first big step in technology by obtaining the permit to use the digital banking operating system which was still under development by Microsoft.
Bank was placed on top with the highest Corporate Governance score in the Corporate Governance Evaluation Report that was carried out for the second time by Istanbul Securities Exchange.

DenizBank’s shares were transferred to Dexia, the Franco-Belgian banking giant in Europe, with a record multiplier of 4.7, and Dexia became the shareholder of the bank.

DenizBank’s training centre, Deniz Academy became operational.

DenizBank agreed to sell its 99.86% shares in DenizEmeklilik to U.S. based insurance giant MetLife for 161.9 million EUR. It was decided for DenizBank branches to sell only MetLife’s pension and life insurance products for 15 years with the life insurance and pension agency agreement that was signed between these two institutions.
A rare structure in the finance structure, DenizTV was founded and became the bank’s television network that enhances the efficiency in training and internal communication.

Bank changed hands for the 3rd time while Mr. Hakan Ateş’s duty as a CEO continued, and Russia’s largest bank, Sberbank became DenizBank’s new shareholder for a consideration of 3.5 billion USD.
First ever Digital Generation Banking Department was established in Turkey and the first CDO of the sector was nominated.
In the same year, according to Millward Brown’s list, when DenizBank was announced the 11th most valuable brand of Turkey when the bank was just a 15-year-old young institution.

DenizBank took over Citi Turkey’s retail banking unit.

DenizBank was named “Most Innovative Bank of the Year” in 2014 BAI Banking Innovation Awards given by USA based Bank Administration Institute (BAI) and American Bankers Association (ABA), two of the most respected institutions across the world in banking management field of financial services sector.
DenizBank was removed from the sanctions list of the USA for Russian companies and their subsidiaries as a result of its contacts.

DenizBank was crowned with “Global Innovator” award given by management consultancy company Accenture and European Financial Management Association (EFMA), in the most prestigious category in 2015 Innovation Awards considered by international financial circles as one of the most prestigious award platforms having more than 3000 bank and finance institution members in 130 countries of the world.

DenizBank was once again chosen as ‘Number 1 in the World in Innovation’ by BAI. Thus, the bank was at the top in the last three years in a row with the awards that it received in digital field.

According to the Accenture Digital Index, DenizBank was among 23 pioneers in Turkey in Digital Index Total Score which consists of Digital Strategy, Digital Operation Competence and Digital Services criteria, and the Bank ranked first in Turkey in Digital Services field also by exceeding the 81% banking sector average with 98%.

Given the significance of big data in finding rapid solutions to customers’ needs, Data Science Programme was initiated – a first in the sector in terms of the size of the team and the contents of the module.

Despite challenging market conditions, DenizBank shares changed hands for the 4th time with almost 1 multiplier, and transferred to Emirates NBD for 15.48 billion TL.

To gather innovation works under one roof, DenizBank created Deniz Aquarium – where the focus is on producing the future technologies and agile business models.

After Deniz Ventures Venture Capital Fund was founded with the vision to be the investment and growth platform of innovative technology initiatives having global growth potential in Europe and MENA regions, the new fintech company NEOHUB was established to contribute t the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Turkey, in an environment where Deniz Aquarium, Deniz Ventures and fastPay are in interaction together.
